CROSS RIVER, CALABAR – Acting Governor of Cross River State, Rt. Hon. Dr. Peter Odey, has stepped in to address the political crisis in Bekwarra Local Government Area following an impeachment notice against Council Chairman, Hon. Theresa Ushie.

This development follows Truth Live News‘ earlier report on the crisis.

On March 20, 2025, nine out of ten Bekwarra councillors initiated impeachment proceedings against Ushie, accusing her of financial mismanagement, lack of transparency, and abuse of office.

They further alleged unilateral decision-making and poor communication between the executive and legislative arms.

In response, Acting Governor Odey convened an emergency stakeholders’ meeting on March 24, 2025, followed by another session on March 28 at his temporary office in the Glass House, Calabar.

After extensive deliberations, stakeholders identified a breakdown in communication as the root cause of the crisis.

Acknowledging this, Ushie apologized for any lapses and pledged to work harmoniously with the legislators and other stakeholders.

Addressing the gathering, Odey urged all parties to prioritize governance and service delivery over political discord.

He emphasized the need for due process, collaboration, and open dialogue to resolve conflicts. Drawing on his experience as a former UNDP advisor and legislator, he adopted a conciliatory approach but warned that such interventions might not always be available.

He called on public officeholders to be proactive and embrace consultation as a conflict-resolution tool.

He also cautioned against weaponizing impeachment for political gains, stressing that it should be a last resort.

State House Speaker Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, APC State Chairman Barr. Alphonsus Eba, and Chief of Staff Hon. Emmanuel Ironbar echoed the call for unity, urging stakeholders to support the “People First” agenda of the administration.

Other attendees included Deputy Speaker Hon. Sylvester Agabi, Bekwarra State Constituency Representative Hon. Charles Omang, and several state commissioners and local government officials.

According to Fred Abua, Esq., Press Secretary to the Acting Governor of Cross River State, the March 28, 2025, meeting underscored the administration’s commitment to fostering peace and stability in the state.
