NIGERIA, CALABAR – The Cross River State Government on Wednesday joined the rest of the country in marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary with a modest and reflective observance.

The event was held in line with the Federal Government’s directive cancelling the traditional parade and other elaborate ceremonies. The state stressed that the celebration, though low key, carried symbolic significance.

Governor Bassey Edet Otu described the anniversary as a sacred moment for Nigerians to reflect on the nation’s progress and resilience. He urged citizens to embrace unity, peace and progress.

“We must look back at how far we have come, celebrate our resilience, and renew our vow to patriotism and togetherness,” Otu said in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Linus Obogo.

The governor noted that situational realities called for modest celebrations, but stressed that the essence of independence was not diminished by reduced fanfare. He maintained that hope and destiny should guide national unity.

He also expressed regret over any inconveniences caused by the scaled-down programme, noting that the choice reflected collective responsibility and harmony with federal directives.

“While the day’s activities may appear less elaborate, the spirit of independence remains deeply meaningful,” Otu added, praying that the triumphs of the past inspire a greater future.

The governor congratulated Cross Riverians, extending warm wishes on the historic occasion. He urged residents to uphold patriotism, saying the anniversary should rekindle collective commitment to building a stronger and united Nigeria.
