KOGI GUBER: Political Parties, Stakeholders Sign Peace Accord

Stakeholders and political parties have come together to commit to a peace accord in anticipation of the upcoming governorship election scheduled for November 11th in Kogi State.

The peace accord ceremony, organized by the Kukah Center and generously supported by the European Union, took place in Lokoja on Wednesday.

Speaking on behalf of the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Mathew Hassan Kukah, Attah Barkindo conveyed a message of unity and civility to the political participants. He stressed the importance of conducting the election process peacefully, emphasizing that it should not be regarded as a life-or-death struggle.

Kukah expressed gratitude to the resilient people of Kogi State for their unwavering belief in democracy and urged all parties to refrain from resorting to violence during the election.

He added, “In any circumstance, democracy is a more favorable choice than dictatorship. I would like to extend my appreciation to all the political parties in attendance. We had concerns that no one would uphold this peace accord due to the prevailing loss of trust and despondency. Widespread disillusionment and a lack of faith in institutions have become pervasive. However, you have all come forward to support this noble cause.

We are profoundly thankful to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the security agencies for their unwavering support and partnership throughout the years.”

The Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, represented by Barrister Didat Ozigi, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, commended the Kukah Center for their dedication to the betterment of humanity. Bello emphasized his administration’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all Kogi State citizens. He acknowledged the significance of this platform in promoting peace and combating insecurity in the state.

Governor Bello encouraged the residents of Kogi to conduct themselves peacefully and adhere to the law before, during, and after the election. He also called on other political parties in the state to join in ensuring a peaceful and harmonious electoral process.
