After 14 minutes, Lutsharel Geertruida of Feyneoord threw the ball in his own net. Hermoso then added an incredible second goal in the 57th, but with 13 minutes remaining, Feyenoord pulled one back through Mats Wieffer’s header from a corner.

But four minutes later, another own goal—this one by Santiago Giménez—sealed the victory for Atletico, who went on to take the lead in Group E and secure a spot in the knockout stage.

After a pause in play, Marcos Llorente floated a speculative cross into the box, and no one attempted to attack it. The ball went in off defender Geertruida. The Feyenoord captain’s leg was struck by the ball, which then into his own net.

The first goal had a strange element to it, but Atleti’s second was pure quality. After coming in for a minute, Pablo Barrios, a 20-year-old substitute, found Hermoso, who volleyed the ball into the opposite corner of the goal.

Dutch supporters would have been reminded of the goal Marco van Basten scored against the Soviet Union in the 1988 European Championship final—struck from an almost unthinkable angle.

After Quilindschy Hartman dispossessed Axel Witsel and squared for Mexican striker Santiago Gimenez, who was fouled by fullback José María Giménez in front of goal, Feyenoord wasted a great opportunity to equalize.

However, Wieffer’s unopposed run home from a corner put the Dutch back in the game, paving the way for a thrilling last fifteen minutes.

However, home hopes were short-lived as Nahuel Molina’s free kick struck the top of Santiago Gimenez’s head and found the net with speed.
