Nigerian airline Air Peace has suspended all flight operations across the country due to an indefinite strike by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), which has disrupted access to critical weather information.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the airline said the strike has made QNH reports, vital for safe aircraft landings unavailable, prompting the suspension.

“Due to the ongoing NiMet strike and the unavailability of QNH (hazardous weather) reports required for safe landings, Air Peace has suspended all flight operations nationwide until the strike is over,” the airline announced. “Your safety is our top priority.”

Air Peace had earlier warned that the NiMet strike could lead to delays and cancellations across its network. The company says it is monitoring developments and working with relevant stakeholders to minimize disruption to passengers.

NiMet employees began an indefinite strike on Wednesday over unresolved welfare issues. Workers accuse the agency’s management of failing to implement previously agreed financial allowances, including wage awards and payments linked to the 2019 minimum wage.

They also allege neglect of staff training and exclusion of some workers from earlier entitlements, while accusing executives of prioritizing retreats over critical capacity-building programmes.

No timeline has yet been announced for the resolution of the strike.
