The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released statistics from the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), revealing that over 1.5 million out of nearly two million candidates scored below 200 marks.
According to the data published on Monday, only 420,415 candidates scored above 200, representing just 21 percent of those who sat for the exam. Less than one percent managed to score above 300, highlighting what the board described as a troubling trend in overall performance.
JAMB also confirmed that 40,247 underage candidates were allowed to take the exam to showcase their abilities. However, only 467 of them achieved scores considered exceptional by the board’s standards, with further stages of assessment still to come.
The board reported that 97 candidates were involved in confirmed exam infractions, while over 2,100 others are being investigated for suspected malpractice. In addition, more than 71,000 candidates were absent from the exams. Candidates facing biometric verification issues are currently under review, and those cleared will be rescheduled.
Some results, including those of blind candidates and others in special categories, are still being processed. JAMB said a press conference will be held later in the week to announce individual results and provide information on how candidates can check their scores.
