The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has issued a directive to all mobile network operators in Nigeria, including MTN and Glo, to inform customers of major service outages through media channels.

The directive requires operators to provide information on the cause of the outage, affected areas, and estimated time of restoration.

Operators are also required to notify customers one week in advance of planned service outages.

Truth Live News gathered that the NCC’s “Directive on Reportage of Major Network Outages by Mobile Network Operators” aims to ensure timely resolution of outages and enhance quality of experience for telecom consumers.

It equally mandates operators to provide proportional compensation, including extension of validity, for outages lasting over 24 hours.

The NCC also directed operators to report major outages through its Major Outage Reporting Portal, which is accessible to the public.

According to the commission, the portal will disclose the identity of culprits responsible for disrupting telecommunications infrastructure.

The Director of Technical Standards and Network Integrity, Engr. Edoyemi Ogor, stated that the directive will promote a culture of accountability and transparency in the industry.

The commission concluded that this initiative aligns with the Executive Order designating telecommunications infrastructure as Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII).
