Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed deep sorrow over two major tragedies that have claimed more than 120 lives in Niger and Kano states.

In a statement released on Sunday by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, Buhari said he was “shocked and devastated” by the scale of the loss following severe flash floods in Niger State and a fatal road accident in Kano.

The floods, triggered by days of torrential rain, swept through communities in Niger State last week, killing over 100 people, destroying homes, and displacing thousands of residents.

In Kano, 22 young athletes, coaches, and officials lost their lives in a tragic auto crash. The victims were returning from the National Youth Games held in Abeokuta, Ogun State, when the accident occurred.

“I am deeply pained by the loss of lives due to the floods in Niger State and the road accident in Kano State. The deaths are painful and devastating,” Buhari said in his message of condolence.

He extended his sympathies to the families, friends, and communities affected, adding: “Condolences to the families and friends of all those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon.”

Buhari noted that the back-to-back tragedies have sparked grief not just across Nigeria, but also among concerned people around the world.

Emergency agencies continue to respond to both incidents, as the country grapples with the emotional and humanitarian aftermath.
