Tottenham Hotspur have sacked manager Ange Postecoglou, despite his historic UEFA Europa League victory last month, after a dismal 17th-place finish in the Premier League—the club’s worst since 1977.

The decision, announced Friday, June 6, 2025, follows a board review citing 78 points from the last 66 Premier League games and a season plagued by injuries and a strategic focus on European success.

Postecoglou, who joined from Celtic in 2023, restored Tottenham’s attacking flair and delivered their first trophy in 17 years, a 1-0 Europa League final win over Manchester United in Bilbao. The club hailed him as only their third manager to win a European trophy, alongside legends Bill Nicholson and Keith Burkinshaw.

However, the board, led by chairman Daniel Levy, deemed the league collapse unacceptable, stating, “We cannot base our decision on emotions aligned to this triumph.”

The sacking, costing Spurs £6 million including a £2 million Europa League bonus, has sparked debate among fans. While some laud Postecoglou’s silverware, others point to 22 league losses and 65 goals conceded.

The club praised his contribution to a “talented, young squad” but emphasized the need for a new approach to compete on all fronts.

Names like Thomas Frank and Marco Silva are rumored as potential replacements.

Tottenham now face the challenge of appointing a new head coach to leverage their Champions League qualification and rebuild domestic form.
