In a dramatic development within Nigeria’s ruling party, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has tendered his resignation, citing health concerns. His decision, which takes immediate effect, was communicated through a letter submitted to the party’s leadership.
Mr. Ganduje, who governed Kano State from 2015 to 2023, assumed the role of APC Chairman in August 2023 during a period marked by internal wrangling and mounting controversies. His tenure has been anything but smooth, with sources close to the party hinting that his resignation may have been influenced by more than just health issues. Party insiders point to rising political tensions and allegations of financial impropriety, particularly over complaints of “excessive financial demands” placed on aspirants vying for party tickets—most notably candidates seeking to contest for area council positions in the Federal Capital Territory.
Ganduje’s leadership faced several legal hurdles as well. In April 2024, a Kano State High Court issued an order restraining him from presenting himself as a member of the party following a suit filed by aggrieved APC officials. Although a Federal High Court in Abuja later dismissed a separate case filed by the APC North Central Forum seeking his removal, the controversies added to the growing pressure on the embattled chairman.
With no official statement yet released by the APC, Ganduje’s resignation has thrown the party’s leadership into uncertainty, sparking speculation about the future direction of the APC as it prepares for key electoral contests ahead. Party stakeholders and political observers alike are now watching closely to see who will step in to fill the leadership vacuum left by his sudden exit.
