ATHENS, GREECE – Nigerian senators have arrived in Athens, Greece for the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) meeting, signaling Nigeria’s commitment to global legislative dialogue and sustainable governance.

The Senate President, Godswill Obot Akpabio, who led the delegation, confirmed their arrival through his official social media account, emphasizing the strategic importance of Nigeria’s participation in global parliamentary affairs.

“On hand to receive us was Dr. Dionysia-Theodora Avgerinopoulou, Chair of the Greek Parliamentary Committee on Environmental Protection,” Akpabio stated, acknowledging Greece’s warm diplomatic gesture at the Archaia Olympian Andravida Military Airport.

Accompanying Akpabio are prominent lawmakers, Senators Ibrahim Dakwambo, Asuquo Ekpenyong, and Titus Zam, who are expected to contribute to panels on governance, climate responsibility, and regional cooperation during the IPU sessions.

Senate President Akpabio reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to ethical representation and policy engagement. “We are here to represent our people, strengthen democratic ties, and learn from others,” he declared.

A senior aide to one of the senators, who requested anonymity, said Nigeria stands to “gain visibility, forge bilateral parliamentary alliances, and contribute meaningfully to global legislative resolutions.”

Truth Live News reports that Nigeria’s presence underscores the growing need for African nations to influence international parliamentary standards, especially on climate justice and development financing.

By participating, Nigeria strengthens its global legislative network while positioning its lawmakers to lobby for international support on national reforms and regional stability.

Experts believe Nigeria’s representation could open up new opportunities for environmental partnerships, given the IPU’s increasing focus on climate resilience and legislative accountability.
