DRC, KASAI – UNICEF announced that nearly 45,000 Ebola vaccine doses are being delivered to Kasai province to protect families and children.

Since the 5 September outbreak, 47 suspected and confirmed cases, including 14 children, have been recorded. Twenty-five people have died,12 of them children, prompting swift, results-driven action.

“Every dose delivered is one more step toward keeping children and families safe,” said UNICEF DRC Representative John Agbor. He stressed that vaccines are vital to stop Ebola and limit harm.

The current hotspot is Bulape, while Mweka and Mushenge face similar threats. Authorities have traced over 1,048 contacts, showing that achieving disease containment guides their moral responsibility.

UNICEF teams, with the Ministry of Health and UN partners, are maintaining the vaccine cold chain. Over 20,000 Ervebo doses have already arrived to vaccinate frontline workers and the most at risk.

Teleological ethics, focusing on the best possible outcomes, shapes this response. Agbor noted that “global solidarity and investment in strong public services” will protect children now and in future crises.

Beyond vaccination, UNICEF reinforces hygiene in schools, hospitals and child-friendly spaces, supports Ebola patients, and provides psychosocial care and child protection services to reduce long-term harm.

This marks the DRC’s sixteenth Ebola outbreak since 1976 and the first in Kasai since 2008–2009. The region’s fragile health system and poor sanitation heighten the ethical urgency for outcome-based interventions.

UNICEF said helping families protect themselves and ensuring effective vaccines are ethical imperatives because these efforts maximize lives saved and suffering reduced, the core of teleological reasoning.
