The Nigerian media industry has been thrown into mourning after the tragic death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a news anchor, reporter, and producer with ARISE News Channel, who was killed during an armed robbery at her home in Katampe, Abuja.
Maduagwu, fondly called “Sommie” by her colleagues, was attacked in the early hours of Monday. She was 29 years old.
In a statement, ARISE News described her as “a cherished member of the ARISE News family” whose voice “engaged and connected with our viewers.”
The statement added: “Sommie’s voice is now silent but her spirit, passion and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory. We call for a speedy investigation, apprehension and prosecution of the culprits.”
The Nigeria Police have since begun an investigation into the incident.
Born on 26 December 1995, Maduagwu was a trained lawyer before moving into broadcast journalism. She quickly earned respect in Nigerian television for her professionalism, charm, and warm on-screen presence.
Her colleagues and management have sent condolences to her family, describing her death as a devastating loss not only to ARISE News but also to the wider Nigerian media industry.
