NIGERIA, UYO – Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) has suspended the Students’ Union President, Mr. Elijah Ekanem, over alleged gross misconduct, pending review by the Students’ Disciplinary Committee and the University Senate.

In a letter dated October 2, 2025, and signed by the Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr. Dominic Ekpo, the university stated that the sanction takes immediate effect.

According to the letter, Mr. Ekanem allegedly forcefully collected a car key from a university driver and gave false information against constituted authority. The Dean described this as “a major gross misconduct.”

Dr. Ekpo added: “I have on several occasions, through verbal and written communication, sought resolution without success.” He explained that the matter had now been referred to the Students’ Disciplinary Committee for proper hearing.

Observers note that disciplinary powers ultimately lie with the University Senate, which considers reports from the Disciplinary Committee before making final decisions. This ensures that the process follows institutional statutes and fair hearing principles.

The Dean further directed the Students’ Union Vice Presidents to assume leadership responsibilities in an acting capacity until the case is resolved.

Ethical analysts argue that the action reflects love-neighbour principles, seeking to safeguard the university community while allowing the accused to defend himself before Senate review.

A university source emphasized: “The step is not condemnation, but protection of values. Both the student leader and the community deserve fairness.”

The suspension underscores the balance between discipline and compassion, showing AKSU’s effort to uphold order while respecting students’ rights.

Mr. Ekanem had not issued a formal response to the suspension at press time.
