Business and commercial activities were brought to a halt on Monday in Awka, the Anambra State capital, as banks, markets, and schools remained closed in compliance with protests demanding the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
One of the city’s major markets, Eke Awka, was completely shut, while some shop owners outside the market were seen standing idly by their stores, chatting rather than trading.
Movement across Awka was limited, with only a few commercial vehicles, motorcycles, and tricycles operating. Many commuters were forced to trek long distances to reach their destinations.
According to reports gathered by Truthlive News, similar situations were observed in other south-eastern states, including Enugu, Ebonyi, and Abia, where most banks, filling stations, and transport companies also shut down operations in solidarity with the protest.
The demonstration, tagged #FreeNnamdiKanu, is part of a series of nationwide actions calling for the IPOB leader’s immediate and unconditional release.
Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his re-arrest in June 2021, despite multiple court rulings ordering his release.
