Nigerian music star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has been appointed chairman of the newly established Osun State Sports Trust Fund.
The state government says the initiative aims to boost funding for sports development and create a sustainable framework to support athletes and sporting facilities across the state.
Announcing the appointment, Osun’s Deputy Governor and Commissioner for Sports, Kola Adewusi, said Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration is committed to transforming the state’s sporting infrastructure — including upgrading the Osogbo Township Stadium to Olympic standards.
“The project, which is currently undergoing renovation, will be completed in the shortest possible time, positioning the facility to host both national and international events,” Adewusi said during a meeting with members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Osun chapter.
He noted that Davido, who is also Governor Adeleke’s nephew, accepted the appointment “without hesitation” and expressed optimism that the singer’s global influence will help attract private-sector partnerships and sponsorships into Osun’s sports sector.
“Plans are already in advanced stages for the creation of the Osun State Sports Commission to oversee sports administration, development, and policy implementation,” Adewusi added.
He said the Sports Trust Fund will serve as a vehicle to mobilise contributions from sports philanthropists and investors both within and outside the state.
“Davido’s involvement will help drive funding and visibility for Osun’s sporting ambitions,” he said.
