Police in Delta State have arrested two key suspects, including a woman alleged to be involved in arms trafficking, and recovered more than 360 rounds of live ammunition.
The Delta State Police Command said in a statement on Saturday that the arrests were carried out by the Commissioner of Police Special Assignment Team (CP-SAT), led by ASP Julius Robinson, following credible intelligence from the Force Technical Intelligence Unit in Abuja.
According to police, the first suspect, identified as Jamila Abubakar, was arrested at a Conoil Filling Station along the Warri–Patani Road in Effurun. She was reportedly found with ₦550,000, believed to be proceeds from illegal arms transactions. Her arrest led investigators to another suspect.
Acting on information obtained from Abubakar, police operatives raided the Niger-Cat area of Warri on 22 October, where they arrested Ahmed Ibrahim, 31. A search of the premises uncovered 115 rounds of AK-47 ammunition, 220 rounds of SMG ammunition, and 32 live cartridges.
Preliminary investigations, according to the Command, suggest that Ibrahim is a major supplier of weapons to armed groups operating in northern Nigeria. He is also believed to have links to several cases of kidnapping and armed robbery.
Police say he has been implicated in the kidnapping and murder of Ogheneovo Onemu, who was abducted in May 2024 in the Ajaokuta community of Ughelli North and later killed despite her family paying a ₦4 million ransom.
The Delta State Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, described the arrests as “a significant milestone” in the command’s efforts to disrupt the flow of illegal arms and dismantle criminal networks.
He urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue sharing credible information with security agencies, adding that the command will “sustain its momentum against criminal elements to protect lives and property across the state.”
