The Abia State government has issued a warning to its citizens about the dangers of consulting quack doctors who falsely claim to be eye practitioners, particularly in rural areas.

According to the government, these unqualified individuals often exploit people’s lack of knowledge, leading to worsening eye conditions due to the use of harmful substances.

Dr. Betty Emeka-Obasi, Administrator of the Abia State Eye Health Management Bureau, gave the advice on Monday at Government House, Umuahia, while speaking to journalists on the outcome of this week’s executive council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.

Obasi, who said that a symposium would be held in Umuahia on October 9, to commemorate World Sight Day, said: “from the inception of this government and from the outreaches and world sight days we had, we realized that majorly, at the bottom of everything that bring about avoidable blindness, is ignorance.”

“Those who have been exploited by quacks out there, they can come and see the professionals,” she said.
