Nigeria’s African Democratic Congress (ADC) has said the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is rapidly losing public support and will suffer a major defeat in the 2027 general elections, despite the trend of high-profile defections

The ADC made the statement on Sunday while reacting to comments credited to APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, who claimed that some prominent ADC members were preparing to defect to the ruling party.

In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC dismissed the claim as “wishful thinking,” describing it as proof that the APC had become desperate in the face of widespread public discontent.

Mr Abdullahi said that under APC’s leadership, Nigerians had experienced worsening economic hardship and growing frustration, adding that defections by political elites would not change the ruling party’s unpopularity.

“The APC has become deeply hated by ordinary Nigerians because of the hardship it has caused,” he said. “Even if all 36 governors join the party, the people’s verdict in 2027 will be clear.”

He accused the ruling party of trying to “seduce” members of opposition parties to bolster its image, comparing the move to similar tactics once used by the former ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

According to the ADC, the ongoing wave of defections to the APC reflects a political class more interested in self-preservation than the welfare of citizens.

“The people understand what is happening, it’s a gang-up by the elite against the masses,” the statement added.
