After Swearing-In Of LGA Chairmen, Magistrates Announce Plans For Strike In C’River

CALABAR: Barely four days after the cross River State concluded Local Government elections and swearing-in ceremony, the State chapter of the Magistrates Association of Nigeria (MAN) has announced a seven-day warning strike.

The Chairman His Worship Godwin Onah and General Secretary His Worship Solomon Abuo announced this In a communiqué signed in Calabar.

Converseer reported that the Magistrates on November 5 held a congress meeting at the Chief Magistrate’s Court Complex in Cross River.

Shortly after the Congress, the association expressed frustration over the state government’s failure to implement promotions for magistrates since 2015.

The magistrates demanded for the immediate implementation of promotions and other financial benefits across all cadres.

They lamented the current amount of N15,000 as monthly impress and demanded increase from Government.

Truth Live News learned that In comparison, stated that magistrates in neighbouring states receive between N200,000 and N250,000 as monthly impress.

Meanwhile,they added that other civil servants were promoted between January and April 2024, but theirs have been neglected.

Moreover, they demanded official vehicles and accommodation, payment of a yearly robing allowance, and the handling of funeral expenses for any deceased magistrate.

Other demands include but not limited to accrued salary arrears for 2019 batch of magistrates, renovations of dilapidated court facilities across the State.

“Failure of the government to hearken to the cry of magistrates and grant the above demands within seven days would leave us with no other option but to embark on a warning industrial action beginning from November 13, 2024,” they said.
