Airlines, Residents Urged to Prepare as NiMet Predicts Thunderstorms, Rainfall Nationwide

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast thunderstorms and rainfall across many parts of the country between Sunday and Tuesday.

In a weather update released on Saturday, NiMet warned that various states in the north, central, and southern regions would experience heavy rains, and in some cases, strong winds.

On Sunday morning, thunderstorms are expected in parts of Taraba, Adamawa, Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Ebonyi, Ekiti, Edo, Abia, Imo, Enugu, Anambra, and Lagos. Later in the day, the weather agency predicts storms in Katsina, Kano, Zamfara, Kaduna, Jigawa, Borno, Gombe, and Bauchi.

By Sunday afternoon and evening, thunderstorms are also expected across the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi, Benue, and Plateau.

For the southern states, a cloudy start is expected on Sunday morning, followed by rain later in the day in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, Delta, and Bayelsa.

On Monday, early rainfall is likely in Cross River, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom, while thunderstorms may hit Sokoto, Zamfara, Bauchi, Abuja, Niger, Kogi, Nasarawa, Plateau, and Benue.

By Tuesday, NiMet projects isolated thunderstorms with moderate rains in Zamfara and Kaduna in the morning, followed by afternoon and evening storms in Plateau, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, Kogi, and Benue.

In the south, rainfall is expected again in Cross River, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom.

NiMet has advised the public to take necessary precautions, warning that strong winds may precede some of the storms. The agency also urged airline operators to stay updated with its forecasts to aid safe flight planning.
