AKWA IBOM, UYO – Governor Umo Bassey Eno of Akwa Ibom State has declared today Tuesday, September 23, 2025, a work-free day to mark the state’s 38th creation anniversary. The announcement was contained in a public notice released on Sunday.
Commissioner for Information, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Umanah, stated in the notice that the holiday allows citizens and residents to participate fully in the anniversary activities. “The governor extends warm wishes for a joyful and peaceful celebration,” Umanah said.
Eno, a pastor and PhD holder, emphasized that the anniversary reflects the people’s unity and resilience. He urged residents to “use the day to strengthen bonds of brotherhood and renew their commitment to the state’s progress,” according to the statement.
The celebration also coincides with Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary. A special state banquet is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the Banquet Hall, Government House, Uyo, and will be broadcast live on multiple radio stations.
Residents welcomed the announcement, saying it gives them time to reflect on the state’s achievements. “It is a good opportunity to celebrate both our state and our nation,” said a Uyo resident, Emmanuel Etuk, when contacted by phone.
Government offices and public institutions will remain closed during the work-free day. Umanah assured that essential services will be maintained while the public enjoys the official holiday.
