The Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) has issued a warning about an imminent network blackout in Lagos and Ogun States due to a worsening diesel supply crisis.

The crisis has been triggered by an indefinite strike by the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD), a branch of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG).

ATCON President, Tony Emoekpere, revealed that the strike has halted the transportation of fuel, severely affecting diesel supply to telecom base stations. Without urgent intervention, millions of mobile and internet users could face widespread service disruptions.

“This strike, caused by the continuous harassment of tanker drivers by the police in Lagos, has completely halted fuel distribution,” Emoekpere explained. “Many telecom sites are running dangerously low on fuel, and if this continues, we could see a full-scale network shutdown.”

The telecom association has called on the governors of Lagos and Ogun to take immediate action by ensuring the release of diesel to telecom operators.

“This is not just a telecom issue—it is a national emergency that could cripple businesses, emergency services, and daily communication,” Emoekpere warned.

ATCON also urged security agencies and petroleum unions to resolve the crisis swiftly to prevent further economic and social disruptions.
