The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) might be walking into a trap set by President Bola Tinubu’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to destroy the opposition party, according to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s camp.
The camp described the recent decision of the PDP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) affirming Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the National Secretary as a scam that doesn’t work.
The NEC decision came after a meeting held behind closed doors at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, where members agreed that Anyanwu should continue to act as national secretary.
The decision was made less than one week after PDP leaders met with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) leadership to resolve the party’s signature crisis.
Atiku’s media aide, Paul Ibe, claimed that those at the center of the crisis were in cahoots with the ruling APC and couldn’t be the ones trying to resolve the issue.
Truth Live News recalls that the party’s leadership crisis over Anyanwu’s position dates back to 2023 when he emerged as the PDP’s governorship candidate in Imo State.
Anyanwu insisted on retaining his position as national secretary despite contesting for office, which generated internal debate.
The South-east chapter of the party and some members of the National Working Committee (NWC) backed SKE Udeh-Okoye as his replacement.
Ibe condemned the alleged intimidation of some NEC members by security agencies, leading to a change in the venue of the meeting.
He cautioned that the party should be careful not to walk into a trap set by the ruling APC to destroy the opposition party.
A former National Auditor of the PDP, Barr Ray Nnaji, said the NEC took the right decision, noting that the party should have taken the necessary steps proactively.
The party’s NEC meeting was held amid the adoption of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the official platform of the opposition coalition.
Political leaders in Nigeria’s opposition parties and some members of the ruling APC gathered in Abuja to unveil the ADC as the official platform of the opposition coalition.
