Hon. Atu Terver Joseph, Principal Special Assistant to the Governor of Benue State on Youth and Media Mobilization, has sacked his Chief of Staff, John Ukeyima, and Chief Press Secretary, Lubem Terkula, for participating in a protest against the recent killings in the state.

The decision was made due to their actions being deemed as working against the state government’s explicit directives, with Terver stating, “This decision has been made due to your actions that have been deemed as working against the explicit directives of your Principal.”

Truth Live News reports that the protest, which drew global attention, was triggered by a recent attack in Yelewata community, Guma Local Government Area, where nearly 250 people were killed, with hundreds of Benue youths staging the demonstration in Makurdi, the state capital.

Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration has faced criticism for its handling of the crisis, with the All Progressives Congress (APC) condemning the alleged suppression of peaceful protesters, describing it as “barbaric” and “a new low in governance”.

The APC also criticized the governor’s alleged dismissive stance on the crisis, citing previous comments where he referred to the killings as “mere skirmishes.”
