The controversy surrounding Senator Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan’s suspension from the Senate has taken an international dimension as the embattled Kogi lawmaker seeks global intervention over what she calls an “illegal” suspension.
Speaking at the Women in Parliament session during the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) meeting at the United Nations in New York, Senator Natasha called for justice, insisting that her removal from the Senate was politically motivated.
The Kogi Central lawmaker was suspended last week after submitting a petition against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, a move that the Senate claimed violated its rules. However, her suspension has sparked widespread debate, with critics arguing that it was a retaliatory action to silence dissent within the legislature.
In her address at the UN event, Senator Natasha decried what she described as an assault on democracy and urged global democratic institutions to intervene. “My suspension is not just about me; it is about upholding the principles of justice and democracy,” she said.
However, the controversy took a new twist when the senator raised concerns about her safety, alleging that there were indications she might be detained in New York against her will by “the powers that be” from Nigeria as a consequence of speaking out.
