No fewer than 70 suspects linked to kidnapping, rape and other criminals activities have been arrested by a joint security forces in Okpella, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State.

The operation was executed by the Special Intelligence Squad of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), with support from the Nigerian Army and private security operatives from BUA Cement.

The raid follows a rise in violent criminal activities in the area, including the recent killing of eight NSCDC personnel.

Acting on intelligence, the squad uncovered and dismantled multiple criminal hideouts. The suspects, many of whom were posing as illegal miners and charcoal vendors, were believed to be operating from remote locations in the surrounding forests.

Among those rescued during the operation was Mrs. Martha Agbe, who had been held captive for over a week alongside her sister-in-law.

Security operatives confirmed their safe recovery and stated that further efforts are underway to trace other victims and dismantle related networks.

Community leaders have welcomed the intervention. The Ogei-Ochi III of the Itsukwi Kingdom described the operation as a turning point, saying it has restored a sense of security and hope among residents.

“We commend the security agencies for their bravery and coordination. Our people can now breathe easier,” he said.

The NSCDC said that while the arrests mark a major breakthrough, more work remains in rooting out criminal elements using legitimate economic activities as cover.

All suspects are currently undergoing profiling and investigation, with prosecutions expected to follow.
