NIGERIA, ABUJA – As the curtains fell on Season 10 of the popular reality television show Big Brother Naija (BBNaija), Truthlive news correspondent took to the streets to find out the opinion of many Nigerians about the show.

The vox pop revealed a growing chorus of Nigerians calling for the program to be banned, citing moral, cultural, and societal concerns.
Many citizens voiced their dissatisfaction with what they describe as the “negative influence” of the show on young people.

“Our children now believe fame comes from immorality and not hard work,” said Mrs. Funmi Adeyemi, a parent in Lagos. “They watch BBNaija and think life is about s€x, parties, and scandals. This is not the Nigeria we want to build.”

Here are other opinions of Nigerians about the show and why it should be banned completely.

“The show glamorizes lifestyles that conflict with the country’s cultural and religious values. Scenes of inappropriate behavior and inappropriate dressing, have become normalized and easily accessible to children. Imagine a child of 9 watching two adults under the sheets on live television. What message is that sending to the mind of such a child”? – a visibly angry parent asked

“At a time when Nigeria faces challenges in education, health care, and youth unemployment, just look at the huge amount of money that goes into putting up this show. Resources that could be used to build our nation” -Noted Comrade Mark

Teachers, religious leaders, and social commentators insist the program shapes young minds to idolize contestants for behavior rather than merit, discouraging focus on education, skill-building, and hard work.

According to some viewers, the show promotes a culture of materialism, where success is measured by luxury endorsements and not by genuine contribution to society.

“BBNaija doesn’t represent the real struggles of Nigerians. It distracts us from our problems and sells the illusion that wealth comes without effort,” noted Chijioke Umeh, a youth leader in Enugu.

In recent weeks, petitions have circulated online demanding the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) step in to review or cancel the show entirely. Some groups have gone further, calling for alternative youth-focused programming that highlights entrepreneurship, innovation, and education.

Proponents of the ban argue that Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage offers more wholesome avenues for entertainment. They suggest that national television could be better used to showcase local talents, promote agricultural entrepreneurship, or spotlight community development stories.

As the debate intensifies, it is clear that while BBNaija has become a cultural phenomenon over the past decade, many Nigerians believe the time has come for a rethink. With Season 10 now concluded, the future of the show remains a topic of heated public discourse — and possibly, government intervention.
