Chelsea have launched an ambitious move to sign Ajax’s 19-year-old defensive prodigy Jorrel Hato, initiating official club-to-club contact to secure his services for the 2025/26 Premier League season.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Blues are prioritizing the versatile Dutch defender, who can play as a left-back or centre-back, to strengthen Enzo Maresca’s backline following their Club World Cup triumph.
Hato, with 111 senior appearances and the 2024/25 Eredivisie Talent of the Year award, is keen on a move to Stamford Bridge and prepared to accept personal terms. Negotiations are advancing smoothly, aided by the strong relationship between Chelsea and Ajax.
While Ajax initially valued Hato at £60m, Chelsea are pushing for a deal closer to £40m, leveraging funds from Noni Madueke’s £52m transfer to Arsenal. The Blues see Hato as a long-term investment to complement their youthful squad, with Maresca aiming to build a robust defense around emerging talents.
Outgoings remain crucial, with João Félix, Christopher Nkunku, and Raheem Sterling potentially leaving to balance the books.
As Chelsea explore solutions with Ajax, Hato’s addition could solidify their backline, positioning them as serious contenders for the Premier League title.
