Celebrated Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has advised young women to be deliberate and thoughtful when choosing a life partner, urging them not to marry out of desperation or societal pressure.

Speaking at a recent student event, the 47-year-old literary icon highlighted the lasting impact that marriage decisions can have on a woman’s life and wellbeing.

“It’s really important who you choose. Young women, choose wisely,” Adichie said. “Sometimes, you know the person you’re with isn’t a good person, but you’re desperate to get married. Don’t settle.”

Adichie, known for acclaimed novels such as Half of a Yellow Sun and Americanah, stressed that a kind and supportive partner can make a world of difference.

“If you choose somebody who’s kind, supportive, it will make all the difference,” she said. “I can tell you that I chose well, there are still some good men left.”

The author, who has been married to Nigerian-American doctor Ivara Esege since 2009, has three children, a daughter and twin boys.

Her remarks come shortly after she spoke publicly about reclaiming her identity by embracing her traditional Igbo name, “Chimamanda,” which she once felt disconnected from.

Adichie is widely recognised for her work promoting gender equality and cultural pride, and her words continue to resonate with audiences around the world.
