Nnamdi Kanu’s legal team has demanded an explanation from the Department of State Services (DSS) over the blocking of his lead lawyer, Kanu Agabi, from accessing him.

“The @OfficialDSSNG needs to explain to Nigerians why it blocked Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN from meeting with his Client MAZI NNAMDI KANU,” Aloy Ejimakor, Kanu’s Special Counsel, said in a statement on X.

Agabi was prevented from gaining access to Kanu at the DSS facility in Abuja, prompting Ejimakor to describe the action as a “flagrant interference with fair trial”.

Kanu has been in DSS custody since June 2021, when he was rearrested and subjected to extraordinary rendition from Kenya to Nigeria.

A few months ago, Justice Binta Nyako of the Abuja Federal High Court had stepped down from Kanu’s trial after much back and forth.

The matter was reassigned to Justice James omotosho of the same court. Under Omotosho, the Nigeria government had slammed terrorism charges on the IPOB leader.

Despite being discharged and acquitted by the Appeal Court in Abuja, Kanu remains in detention, with the Nigerian government refusing to sanction his release.

The case has been ongoing, with the prosecution presenting its witnesses who have been testifying against Kanu.
