Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has clarified his recent remarks about Labour Party’s Peter Obi, saying his call for “clearance” before Obi enters the state was a matter of security protocol, not a personal threat.

Speaking on Sunday through his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, Okpebholo said the governor, as the state’s Chief Security Officer, is constitutionally responsible for safeguarding all residents and visitors. He stressed that high-profile individuals, especially political figures, must notify the state government before holding public events that may draw large crowds or media attention.

“When such protocols are ignored, it creates serious security risks, not only for the visitor but also for citizens who may be caught in avoidable threats,” the statement read. It cited the recent rise in attacks and abductions targeting religious leaders, including priests and Christian clerics, as a key reason for the heightened caution.

Okpebholo also addressed his comments on donations made to churches and other faith-based institutions, saying public giving should be discreet and coordinated with security agencies to avoid putting these institutions and their leaders at risk. He referenced a biblical teaching from Matthew 6:2-4, which encourages giving in private.

“Edo State has suffered tragic incidents, including the abduction of seminarians and the killing of clergy in recent years. In today’s volatile security environment, caution and discretion are essential,” the statement said.

The governor urged the public not to twist his remarks for political purposes, adding that the state would not allow politically motivated activities to compromise safety. He further noted that his position should not be compared to actions taken by other governors in the past, including Peter Obi’s detention of Nasir El-Rufai during a visit to Anambra State.

Okpebholo concluded by reaffirming his administration’s commitment to security and protocol, insisting that all leaders, regardless of status, must align with the security realities of the areas they visit.
