The Edo State Government has given a seven-day ultimatum to former deputy governor of the state, Mr. Godwin Omobayo, to return all state-owned properties and assets in his possession or face legal full wrath of the law.
In an official statement signed by Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, the government expressed dismay over Mr. Omobayo’s continued retention of official vehicles, documents, and other state assets allegedly assigned to him during what the statement described as his “brief and illegitimate tenure.”
According to the release, despite several formal reminders, Mr. Omobayo has yet to comply with the handover of these items.
The government said that all assets acquired or utilized during public service remain the property of the state and must be duly returned upon leaving office.
“The continued retention of such property constitutes a breach of public trust and unlawful possession of state assets,” the statement said.
The government has therefore given Mr. Omobayo one week from the date of the announcement to surrender all items to the Office of the Secretary to the State Government.
The government said failure to comply, will prompt the Edo State Police Command to take action, including arrest and forced recovery of the state’s property “through lawful means.”
According to the statement also “Governor Okpebholo’s administration reaffirmed its commitment to accountability, transparency, and the protection of public resources, emphasizing that no individual, regardless of past office or political affiliation, will be allowed to unlawfully retain state assets.
“This administration will continue to uphold integrity and discipline in public service,” the statement concluded, urging Mr. Omobayo to comply and “avoid further embarrassment.”
