The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has concluded the screening of aspirants for its upcoming party primaries scheduled for July 21, 2025, ahead of the August 16 National Assembly by-elections for Edo Central Senatorial District and Ovia Federal Constituency.
In the screening exercise conducted on Tuesday, July 15, at the PDP State Secretariat in Benin City, a total of four aspirants were successfully cleared. For the Edo Central Senatorial ticket, John Yakubu, Friday Itulah, and Joe Okojie were cleared to contest, while Johnny Ikponmwosa Aikpitanyi emerged as the sole cleared aspirant for the Ovia Federal Constituency seat. However, Festus Edogun was not cleared to contest for the senatorial seat.
The screening exercise was overseen by a five-member panel constituted by the PDP National Working Committee and chaired by Professor Okumoko Tubo Pearce. Other members of the panel included Arc. Chinomso Odoemelan (Secretary), Inemo Dede, Evelyn Promise, and David Omare. Certificates of clearance were presented to successful aspirants on Friday, July 18, at the Edo PDP Secretariat.
Reacting after receiving his certificate, Aikpitanyi expressed appreciation to the screening committee, describing the process as transparent and professional. “With this clearance, we are set for the task ahead. I’m fully prepared to carry the PDP flag in Ovia, and with the overwhelming support of our people, we will secure victory and deliver quality representation,” Aikpitanyi said. He reaffirmed his commitment to grassroots development, pledging to make Ovia “shine again, and shine even brighter.”
