Elder statesman Edwin Clark has strongly condemned the removal of former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen, by ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, describing it as “disgraceful, callous, unjust, and barbaric.”

Clark commended current Chief Justice of Nigeria, Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, for her efforts in resolving the injustices faced by Onnoghen.

He praised Kekere-Ekun for starting a “serious and genuine clean-up” of the Nigerian judiciary.

Clark alleged that Buhari’s action was motivated by Onnoghen’s principled stance and independence, which threatened Buhari’s second-term bid.

He urged President Bola Tinubu’s government not to allow “sacred cows” to exist in Nigeria, regardless of who is involved.

Recall that the removal of Onnoghen has been a contentious issue, with many criticizing Buhari’s actions as an attack on the judiciary’s independence.

The Court of Appeal recently acquitted Onnoghen of false assets declaration charges.
