Authorities in Enugu State have arrested a man accused of posing as a medical doctor and operating an illegal hospital in the Obollo-Etiti community of Udenu Local Government Area.
The state Ministry of Health said the facility, identified as St. Joseph Memorial Hospital, was sealed after officials discovered that the operator, Kenneth Mamah, had no medical licence or professional training.
In a statement on Sunday, the ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Ugodu Avemaria, said the operation was led by the Commissioner for Health, Professor George Ugwu, following credible complaints from local residents.
According to the ministry, investigators found that Mamah had been carrying out surgical procedures and other medical activities inside his consulting room under highly unhygienic and unsafe conditions.
“These practices posed serious danger to the lives of the people who believed they were receiving proper medical care,” Avemaria said.
The government says it will continue strict enforcement to protect public health and prevent unqualified individuals from endangering lives in the state.
