The European Union’s Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, has called on China to work towards a negotiated solution to address issues arising from the US’s sweeping import tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump.

In a phone call with China’s Premier Li Qiang, von der Leyen emphasized the responsibility of Europe and China, as two of the world’s largest markets, to support a strong and reformed trading system based on free, fair, and level playing field principles.

The EU is concerned that China may redirect cheap exports from the US to Europe, potentially disrupting global trade, and has proposed setting up a mechanism to track possible trade diversion caused by the tariffs.

The US has threatened to impose an additional 50% tariff on Chinese goods, prompting China to vow not to yield to US pressure and to protect its legitimate interests.

China has already imposed retaliatory tariffs of 34% against the US, leading to concerns about escalating trade tensions and potential impacts on global economic growth.

Truth Live News reports that the trade tensions between the US and China have significant implications for the global economy, with potential consequences including higher prices, reduced demand, and a possible global recession.
