The Nigerian federal government has approved a significant increase in the monthly allowance for members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), raising it from N33,000 to N77,000.

The increase takes effect from July 2024.

The announcement was made in a statement released on Wednesday by Caroline Embu, the acting spokesperson of the NYSC.

The pay hike follows the enactment of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024.

According to the statement, the approval was detailed in a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, signed by its Chairman, Ekpo Nta, on September 25, 2024.

NYSC Director General, Brigadier General YD Ahmed, had previously advocated for improved welfare for corps members during a visit to the Commission’s chairman. He expressed his gratitude to the government for the timely approval of the allowance increase.

Brigadier General Ahmed noted that the pay raise will provide much-needed relief to corps members and is expected to boost their morale and commitment to serving the nation.

The NYSC is a mandatory one-year program for Nigerian graduates, designed to foster national unity and provide practical work experience.
