The Federal Government has approved a new identity verification service developed by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to improve the safety, privacy, and ease of verifying citizens’ identities using their National Identification Number (NIN).
In a statement released on Tuesday, NIMC’s Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, said the new service, called “NIN Authentication (NINAuth)”, will be used by all government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies for identity checks.
The platform allows identity verification through websites, mobile apps, or direct system integration via API, providing more secure access to services such as SIM registration, passport applications, driver’s licence renewals, and financial transactions.
Adegoke explained that the system gives individuals more control over their personal data. “Users must give consent before their information is used for services like Know Your Customer (KYC) checks,” he said, adding that the service protects against unauthorised access and misuse of data.
The new service aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda which aims to modernise public services and strengthen digital security across Nigeria.
NINAuth also supports real-time verification, making it easier for agencies and businesses to comply with national identity regulations. Its “single sign-on” feature means people can access multiple services through one secure login.
“This launch is a major step in improving identity management and service delivery in Nigeria,” Adegoke said.
The platform is now the official channel for all identity checks involving the NIN.
