Air navigation operations across Nigeria may soon be grounded as aviation unions have directed all workers of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) to commence an indefinite withdrawal of services beginning Monday, August 11, 2025, at 05:00hrs.
This development follows the expiration of a notice previously issued on July 30, 2025, according to a joint statement released today by four major aviation unions: the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), the Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP), and the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE).
The unions have instructed all NAMA staff to cease operations indefinitely, citing unresolved issues with the federal government. The statement emphasized that the strike action is to be strictly adhered to, and only directives from the National Secretariats of the signatory unions will be recognized for further decisions.
“All airlines and allied companies, as well as the flying public, are hereby informed of the above-stated action and advised to make alternative travel arrangements,” the notice warned.
The statement was signed by Comrade AbdulRasaq Saidu (ANAP), Comrade Odinakachukwu J. Igbokwe (NUATE), Comrade Frances Akinjole (ATSSSAN), and Comrade Alo Lawrence O. (AUPCTRE), all top officials of the unions.
Copies of the notice have also been sent to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development and the Managing Director of NAMA. The unions are yet to disclose if there have been negotiations or government interventions to avert the impending shutdown.
