RIVERS, PORT HARCOURT – Governor Siminalayi Fubara has criticized the contractor handling the 6.5km Woji–Aleto–Alesa–Refinery Road project in Rivers State, citing poor performance despite full government funding.

Fubara made the remarks during an inspection of the site, which includes a 200-metre bridge, according to a statement posted on his official Facebook page.

“The contractor has failed to justify the resources invested,” the governor said. He warned that the company must complete the project within one month or face sanctions.

In a firm directive, the governor also ordered an immediate halt to dredging activities around the bridge area, citing safety and environmental concerns.

Fubara reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to responsible governance, saying, “We are here to provide quality infrastructure that serves the people, not excuses.”

Ethical concerns are emerging as public funds have been fully disbursed, yet work remains incomplete. The governor’s stance reflects growing intolerance for inefficiency in state-funded projects.

Fubara’s statement emphasized that his administration will not compromise on quality or deadlines. “We owe it to our people to deliver results, not stories,” he added.

The inspection highlights broader issues of situational ethics in public infrastructure management, where timely delivery is a moral and contractual obligation.

As the government pressures the contractor to meet the revised deadline, stakeholders are watching closely to see if the warning translates into action.

The Rivers State Government insists that any failure to comply will attract appropriate consequences, reinforcing its zero-tolerance approach to underperformance.

At 6.5km long with a major bridge, the road is considered a strategic route for local mobility and economic activity in the Eleme axis.

Observers believe this action could signal stricter oversight of contractors and a push for accountability in project execution across Rivers State.
