A tragic clash in Jatori village, Gubio Local Government Area, claimed the life of 18-year-old farmer Isaye Kundili on September 19.
According to sources, the incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. when a herder allegedly trespassed onto Kundili’s millet and beans farm with his cattle. “An altercation ensued when the young farmer attempted to chase the herd away,” a source revealed, “during which the herder shot him in the chest with a bow and arrow before fleeing the scene.”
The wounded teenager was rushed to the Primary Health Care Centre in Gubio, but medical staff confirmed his death during treatment. “His body was later released to relatives for burial in line with Islamic rites,” the source added.
The incident has heightened local concerns over recurring farmer-herder conflicts, which often stem from disputes over land use.
Police have launched a manhunt for the suspect, collaborating with the herders’ union to track down the perpetrator. “Efforts were ongoing to trace and arrest the fleeing suspect,” authorities stated, emphasizing their commitment to resolving the case swiftly.
The killing again, shows the persistent challenge of managing grazing disputes in Borno State, where competition for arable land frequently sparks violence.
Community leaders are calling for dialogue and stronger measures to prevent such tragedies, while Kundili’s family and neighbors mourn the loss of the young farmer.
