United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has issued a strong appeal for calm as tensions between Iran and Israel continue to rise, warning that the situation could quickly spiral into an uncontrollable regional crisis.
Speaking at a UN Security Council session on Friday, Guterres called on all parties — and those considering involvement, to “give peace a chance,” in what appeared to be a direct appeal to the United States, which is reportedly weighing military support for Israel.
“We are not drifting toward crisis , we are racing toward it,” Guterres said. “We are not witnessing isolated incidents, we are on course to potential chaos.”
The UN chief warned that any expansion of the conflict could ignite a much broader and uncontrollable war. “The expansion of this conflict could ignite a fire that no one can control. We must not let that happen.”
His comments come amid growing fears of escalation in the Middle East, with international leaders urging diplomacy to prevent a full-scale war.
