Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), his office confirmed today, Wednesday, October 15th, 2025, in a move that was accompanied by the resignation of the Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly and a large number of state lawmakers.
Governor Diri in a state broadcast today announced his exit from the PDP but did not outrightly state if he as moved to the APC like many speculate.
According to the governor’s chief press secretary, Daniel Alabra, Diri had left the party but had not yet formally joined any other political organisation. However, political commentators and several news outlets have linked the mass resignation to an impending defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Meanwhile, reports from the Government house in Yenagoa, the state capital, revealed that the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Abraham Ngobere, led the group of legislators who also renounced their PDP membership, with several outlets putting the number of lawmakers who resigned at 23.
On social media, many political enthusiasts have said that Diri and his loyalists may be set to align with the APC , a move that would further weaken the PDP in the South-South ahead of the 2027 general elections.
