CROSS RIVER, CALABAR – Governor of Cross River State, Sen. Bassey Edet Otu, has approved the appointment of Barrister Orok Bassey Okon as the new Head of the State Civil Service, effective September 19, 2025.

In a statement issued on Tuesday in Calabar, Chief Press Secretary and Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Linus Obogo, confirmed the governor’s approval. He said the appointment followed the retirement of Dr. Innocent Ebri Eteng, whose career in public service is described as “a beacon of dedication and excellence.”

Governor Otu, in the statement, charged the incoming Head of Service “to lead with vision, integrity and reform-driven zeal.” He urged Okon to foster efficiency, professionalism and accountability across the state’s public service.

“The administration is resolute in enthroning competent leadership and strengthening the machinery of governance for optimal service delivery to the people of Cross River State,” the governor stressed through his spokesman.

Obogo explained that the governor considered Okon’s record of professionalism and commitment to reform before making the appointment. He added that the administration expects the new Head of Service to sustain public trust and maintain the ethical standards set by his predecessor.

Dr. Eteng, who voluntarily retired after decades of service, earned praise for an “illustrious career” marked by integrity and dedication. His tenure, according to the statement, stands as an example of ethical leadership in the state civil service.

Observers note that the governor’s emphasis on ethics and accountability reflects growing public demand for transparency and responsible governance. Good governance advocates say such appointments strengthen confidence in state institutions and encourage reform-minded leadership.

Truth Live News reports that Okon’s assumption of duty on September 19 is expected to ensure continuity of service and to drive reforms aimed at improving efficiency across ministries, departments and agencies.

The governor’s office reiterated its commitment to uphold the principles of integrity and professionalism as the state transitions to new leadership in the civil service.
