A violent clash in Sebre village, Ardo Kola Local Government Area of Taraba State, left farmer Danjuma Samaila, 37, dead after a dispute with a herder, Ali Sani, 27, on Tuesday.
According to counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, the incident, which occurred at about 12:35 p.m., began when Sani, a Fulani herder from Sebre, led his cattle into a melon farm owned by Samaila, a Mumuye farmer from Yale village.
Sources said an argument broke out, during which the herder allegedly attacked Samaila with a machete, inflicting deep cuts on his back. The farmer died instantly, while Sani fled, abandoning 14 cows.
Sani was later spotted at the outskirts of Sebre by aggrieved Mumuye youths, who attacked him with machetes. He sustained serious injuries before being rescued and taken to a hospital.
The body of the slain farmer was evacuated to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jalingo, where he was confirmed dead.
Tension remains high in Sebre and surrounding villages, though elders and local leaders are said to be engaging youths to prevent further escalation.
