Authorities in Anambra State, southeastern Nigeria, have uncovered an illegal artisanal refinery during a joint operation by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Nigerian Navy, and the Army.
The raid, which took place at Y-Junction in Nkwelle Ezunaka, Oyi Local Government Area led to the arrest of one suspect, while several others fled the scene.
Security officials recovered 49 kegs of 25 litres each, believed to contain adulterated diesel (Automotive Gas Oil), along with four drums of 200 litres. Other items seized included suspected adulterated petrol (Premium Motor Spirit) and a pumping machine.
All recovered materials have been handed over to the NSCDC, which will take charge of prosecution.
Commandant of the NSCDC in Anambra, Maku Olatunde, speaking after the raid, issued a stern warning to those engaged in illegal oil refining and fuel distribution, urging them to desist or face legal consequences.
“Our sights are set on individuals and groups involved in oil-related crimes,” he said. “If they fail to change, the command will take more decisive action against them.”
He also praised the Nigerian Navy and Army for their support, reaffirming the NSCDC’s commitment to ridding the state of illegal activities in the oil and gas sector.
