The 2023 Edition of the prestigious Gregory imafidon Foundation Gold cup tournament for secondary schools in Edo state, will climax today at the Uwa Primary school mini-sports complex, in Benin city, the Edo state capital.
The week long soccer carnival, the 5th in the series will see the last four schools fighting for the various prizes, scholarship, Trophy, cash and lots more in Friday’s final match.
After Thursday semifinals clash, Favourites Niger college defeated Ogbe secondary school 3-1 to qualify for the final, while in the second Semifinal,, Defending champion Benin Technical college lost on Penalties 4-5 to the famous Edokpolor grammar school after 1-1 at regulation time.
The third place match between Benin Technical college and Ogbe secondary school comes up by 2pm on Friday, while the grand finale will see Niger college take on Edokpolor grammar school by 4pm
According to the organisers, three individual award winners which include the MVP, Best Goalkeeper and the Top scorer of the tournament will get scholarships courtesy of the tournament sponsor, United States of America based ex Footballer Gregory imafidon, CEO Gregory imafidon Foundation who is already in town for the closing ceremony of the biggest schools soccer tournament in Edo state.
Other individual awards such as best coach, Fair play team of the tournament and best Midfielder, best coach will also be rewarded by the Sponsor, just as the last four teams have been given branded jerseys by the Gregory imafidon Foundation for today’s matches.while the first, second and third place teams will also be rewarded with Trophies, Medals and Cash.
It will be recalled that 28 schools in Edo state entered for the competition for Free.
Expected at the closing ceremony today, are Officials of the ministry of Education, members of the Edo state sports commission and Edo State football Association, ex internationals amongst others.
