Former Sokoto State Governor and current Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal is in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja, facing allegations of financial crimes involving ₦189 billion.
According to SaharaReporters. The former House of Representatives Speaker, who governed Sokoto from 2015 to 2023, was summoned to the EFCC headquarters on Monday morning and arrived around 11:30 am, where he was ushered into an interrogation room.
Top EFCC sources revealed to newsmen that Tambuwal is being questioned over massive cash withdrawals allegedly made in violation of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
The exact period during which these withdrawals occurred remains unclear at this time.
Tambuwal, now representing Sokoto South Senatorial District, has been a prominent figure in Nigerian politics, having served as Speaker from 2011 to 2015 before his governorship.
The allegations have sent shockwaves through political circles, given Tambuwal’s long-standing career and influence.
The EFCC’s investigation is expected to scrutinize financial transactions linked to his tenure as governor, though specific details are yet to emerge.
When reached for comment, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale declined to provide any statements on the ongoing probe.
Tambuwal’s detention marks a significant moment in Nigeria’s ongoing battle against corruption, raising questions about accountability among the country’s political elite.
