The crisis within Kano’s New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) is intensifying, especially after high-profile figures like House of Representatives members Aliyu Sani Madaki and Alhassan Rurum announced their departure from the Kwankwasiyya Movement led by Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Truth Live News gathered that this rift highlights deeper challenges facing the NNPP in Kano, as internal dissatisfaction grows around Kwankwaso’s dictatorial leadership style and strategic direction.

Madaki’s recent statements suggest strong opposition to Kwankwasiyya’s perceived sidelining of some leaders and failing to recognize contributions from long-standing members. Adding to this, he warned Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf of potential betrayal within his ranks, indicating tensions around the governor’s authority in local governance and his alignment with Kwankwaso.

This discord is not isolated. Governor Yusuf recently intervened in an internal party dispute involving the Secretary to the State Government and other key officials, signaling the extent of factionalism. Some reports even describe a wave of NNPP members switching allegiance to the APC, citing frustrations with Kwankwaso’s dominance over the NNPP and concerns about his national ambitions. Kwankwaso’s openness to running as a vice-presidential candidate with Peter Obi has also stirred discontent, as it conflicts with northern political expectations for 2027.

Such developments cast uncertainty over the NNPP’s stability, especially as the APC positions itself to capitalize on these divisions heading into the next election. The party’s unity is further strained by Kwankwaso’s cautious silence amid escalating challenges, even as he distances himself from recent factional controversies.
